Located in the geographical center of Europe, Lithuania shares 610 km of borders with Latvia in the North, 303 km with Russian Federation on the West (region of Kaliningrad), 80 km with Poland and 650 km in the South and east of the country with Belarus. The total surface of the Republic is 65.200 km2. She(it) is lined on the West by 99 km of coast giving access to the Baltic Sea. Reliefs are little stressed: sandy plains, hills covered with forests of pines, numerous lakes and stream. The climate is at once maritime and continental with cold winters and pleasant summers. The annual average temperature is 6,1 °C. Winds directed in the southwest prevail and the coastal zone is the most exposed(explained). The freshest(coolest) temperatures are registered(recorded) east of the country. The strongest precipitation concern the West of the country (> 930 mm), the least important (approximately 600 mm) are observed in the South.4) Main cities A) Vilnius City of 554.000 inhabitants on Neris, Vilnius (in Russian Vilna, in Polish Wilno), capital of Lithuania is an economic and industrial center (machine tools, electrical equipment and electronics, foodstuffs, clothes, furniture). The old town shelters the vestiges of a medieval castle, a cathedral of the XIVth century, a university based(established) by the Jesuits in 1578, the baroque churches, of which that of Tous-les-Saints, who contains the museum of the Lithuanian traditional Arts. B) Historic Kaunas Capitale, in the center of Lithuania ( 379.000 inhabitants). Port(bearing) in the confluence of rivers Niemen and Neris. It is a shopping and industrial mall (textiles(textile industries), foodstuffs, metallurgy and mechanical industry). Kaunas shelters several universities and university middle schools(colleges), as well as the national Museum of the Fine arts(School of Fine Arts) of Lithuania. We can visit the vestiges of a castle of the XIVth century, Vytautas du XVème's Lithuanian Gothic church century and a monastery of the XVIth century.
