Bilbao is located in the Iberian Peninsula, in its eastern Atlantic watershed -latitude: 43º 15' 42" N, longitude: 2º 55' 43" W-, 19 metres above sea level, and it covers an area of 41.6 square kilometres. Its impressive transportation infrastructure connects it to the rest of Europe by air, land and sea. Bilbao is the core of a metropolitan area with more than one million inhabitants. Since its foundation, more than 700 years ago, it has been the fundamental factor and the main socio-economic axis around which the Vizcaya region has set its modernisation process in motion. From Burdeos to La Coruña, Bilbao's hegemony is undisputable. No other city has better reasons to be the economic, financial, cultural and tourist capital of the region. De la Merced Bridge The bridge was rebuilt over the original one, designed by Ernesto Hoffmeyer in 1883 De la Merced Church The old San José de la Naja monastery was built in 1675 to redeem convicts. It was rebuilt in 1750, and today, fully refurbished, is the venue for "Bilborock", plays and youth music shows. Riverside Bridge This graceful pedestrian bridge has an iron arch designed by Pablo de Alzola y Minondo in 1881. Riverside Arcade The arcade delimits the Medieval Citadel and was declared an Artistic-Historical Building in 1972. Riverside Market The market features an eclectic style and a beautiful architecture with outstanding windows. It was designed by Pedro de Ispizua y Susunaga, who came from Bermeo. The market, which is well-known for its high-quality fish and seafood, was built in 1929. After the 1983 summer flood, it was dried up and refurbished, so its interior structure and facilities have been modernised. Mniej
