A magical day trip by train from Madrid is the medieval city of Segovia. The train ride takes you through rolling foothills of snow capped mountains. You pass tiny villages and see the farms of the famous black bulls of bullfights. The bulls dot the hills and in May, poppies dot the pastures and the bases of the aged stone walls. At the Segovia train station, take a bus or taxi to the huge Roman Aquaduct that traverses the city center. In it's shadows are whimsical carrousels and a must stop...a Valore Chocolateria. Yes! A shop devoted exclusively to all things Valore chocolate. Sit outside in the shade of the aquaduct and enjoy one of their decadent concoctions. Then take a cab to old town to view and tour the Alcazar, the famous Segovia castle, atop a precipice. The cab will wind up narrow streets to enter the medieval town with it's cathedral. A short walk takes you to the Alcazar. From the ramparts, you look upon a Spanish plain with a sole 12 sided chapel built by the Knights Templar where Crusaders worshiped. Segovia is only 82 Km from Madrid, a very doable, affordable, and memorable excursion.
