Lázně Bohdaneč is a picturesque, quickly growing spa town in the Labe river lowland near Pardubice. The first records of the town as the intersection of trade routes Pardubice - Chlumec nad Cidlinou, and Hradec Králové - Kutná Hora date back to 1264. The turn of the 15th century marks the boom of this quiet, mainly agricultural town, when the owner of Pardubice estate, Vilém of Pernstein, had built an extensive network of more than 300 ponds around Bohdaneč. These were water-fed by an artificial canal from Labe river. The Opatovice canal, built between 1498 and 1514, is used until today, and it is an important technical monument. Today's Lázně Bohdaneč is a quiet spa town with wide range of quality services. After the departure of Soviet garrison in 1991 the former army barracks have been turned to new housing development Na Lužci, where a pink tank torso reminds of the recently gained freedom. The number of permanent residents have grown by one third in the past 10 years to 3.170 people. The reconstruction of local streets continues, the central square will be renovated, and the gas lines in the town are finished. The Information centre, providing complete services to visitors, was opened. THE SPA BUSINESS The founding of the bog bath in 1897 by the Bohdaneč's native Jan Veselý set the recreational character of the town. The spa was opened in 1897 after discovering extensive deposits of high quality bog. Various disorders of moving apparatus and inflammatory diseases are cured with its help here. Today, after more than 100 years of development, we find in Lázně Bohdaneč well-known spa establishment with charming colonnades and numerous treatment buildings, surrounded by greenery. The "Gočár" pavilion, an important Cubism architecture building named after its author, dominates the grounds. This note-worthy unique structure sets the distinctive mood of the resort, the place of health, rest and quiet. TRADITION OF POND TRADE The pond trade have been maintained in the town since Vilém of Pernstein's period. Today, the company Rybniční hospodářství, s.r.o. controls 56 ponds. Two largest ones, Bohdanečský and Matka, have been named by the National wildlife reservation as the significant water and bog birds' nesting places, and important stop-overs on their flight.
