The Pantheon has represented the maximum expression of the glory of Rome for over 2000 years. It’s story is in dissolutely tied to the Eternal City of which it has been the image throughout the centuries. The Pantheon was an inspiration for one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance, Raffaello, who requested it become his place of eternal rest It is the only Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries and was founded by Agrippa between 25 and 27 B.C as a temple dedicated to the twelve Gods and to the living Sovran. Traditionally it is held that the present building is fruit of the radical reconstruction promoted by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD. In 608 Pope Boniface IV had the remains of many martyrs removed from the Christian catacombs and placed in the Pantheon. Therefore the temple was officially converted to Christianisation with the name of Saint Maria ad Martyres. - http://www.pantheonroma.com/en/pantheon.html Less
